Chapter 2: Bumper Stickers
I would make the trip from Lubbock to Corpus Christi several times in a year and I’ve seen a ton of bumper stickers on the road. a lot to be said about what people decide to put on the bumper of their car. A lot of the time its political sometimes it’s personal. Well, it’s always personal right? Otherwise you wouldn’t put a $10 paper sticker on a $30,000 car right? The things you put on the back of your car mean a lot to you and it’s a good way to give people a crash course on who you are and what you’re about. So I thought I would take the time to tell you what stickers are on my metaphorical bumper to let you know what I’m about.
Texas Tech Double T
Since I went to Texas Tech, I have to let people know that the guy you’re tailgating is a bonafide Red Raider. As for the reason its not the beveled Double T, I happen to just prefer this retro style more. Plus now that. I’ve graduated I like to think that it tells the driver “I’m an alumni” not just a student.
Houston Astros Pennant
It’s not recency bias, this bumper sticker is displayed proudly because I love the Houston Astros. I am not a fair weather fan, I paid my dues in the 2010’s when the Astros were the worst team in the MLB. I digress, the point of this sticker is to tell people I am a baseball fan. I absolutely love the sport, but that’s a blog for another time.
The Goshdarn Jets
That’s right. Go ahead, make fun of my choice of football team. Nothing you can say can hurt me. I constantly blame my 10 year old self for falling in love with Mark Sanchez and that New York defense. Two AFC Championship loses and then 11 years without playoffs for us Jets fans. A revolving door of first round quarterbacks that never pan out or demand trades. The “Butt Fumble.” Go ahead, make fun of me and my team…you cannot hurt me.
Neon Genesis Evangelion/Garfield
I’m not one to flaunt my love of anime out in public, in fact I would even say that my love of anime doesn’t really reach the need to talk about it outside of friends and loved ones. However, this is an exception. Neon Genesis Evangelion is without a doubt, THE BEST anime of all time. If you have not seen it, you must stop what you are doing and go and see it. It’s gonna require like all of your brain power and concentration, but the payoff at the end of it all might make you cry. I did the first time I watched it. It’s a powerful message. Garfield is an orange tabby that loves lasagna. He is without a doubt, THE BEST cartoon cat of all time. Put two GOATs together and that’s a herd ya heard?
Jeff Rosenstock/Music
I was originally going to keep this ambiguous and just mention my love for music, but then I remembered how I plan to get a Jeff Rosenstock tattoo in the future and thought, “oh yeah he’s my favorite artist.” Jeff is a punk rocker from New York who has captivated me, and others I’m sure, to proclaim him as the best musician of our time. His works have moved me to the point of tears and has inspired me to do lots of things positive in my life. Music in general will inspire me, almost all of my family is musically talented in some way and we all have that connection together, but we have started zero bands. Aint that a quinky dink?
Pokemon
When I was a little lad and when my parents were still together, I had a Gameboy Color. On that Gameboy Color, I had like 3 games: Pacman, Power Rangers Time Force and Pokemon Blue. That was about 25 years ago and still to this day I love and play Pokemon. It may be my favorite game of all time.
Corpus Christi
This is where I grew up. This is where I live. This is the city that I know and love. It’s familiar here. It’s comfortable here. I want to see this place grow and flourish. This city gets a bad rap from its own citizens, but I think if you spend time here, you’d get it. This place is home and I would love to represent it as someone important in the future.
And maybe that’s enough for now. I’m sure as time goes on, dear reader, that you will learn more about me and what I do and dont stand for. Who knows. The fact is that a bumper sticker isn’t meant to give you a whole picture of who I am or what I am. It just opens the door to, “oh hey you like this thing, I also like this thing, we should talk/hang out.” I am doing this as a way for you to get a feel for whom I am. And I am a guy whom uses “whom” incorrectly at times.
